MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise is the first MA programme of Central Saint Martins outside London to acknowledge the need for multi-skilled individuals who can both generate the ideas for original arts and cultural events, and provide leadership for the teams that realise them. The programme enables responses to new forms of creative practice, and changing global conditions.

The programme aims to equip you with the knowledge, cognitive and practical skills which will enable you to develop expertise as cultural producers within a fast-changing, globalised cultural economy.
It achieves this by establishing a framework of learning that will enable you to interrogate and understand cultural policies and governance, and through a pedagogy based on collaboration and peer-to-peer learning.
You will extend and expand your understanding of the value of culture and creative content within a business framework in today's multi-national cultural economy and how this varies across the globe.
Ultimately, the programme aims to enable you to step up to challenges in the next stage of your career within the creative industries, and to lead teams effectively, in order to realise ambitious creative and cultural events and projects across different media, platforms and countries.
- This MA is the first-of-its-kind master’s programme offered in both London and Hong Kong by Central Saint Martins, a leading institute in arts and design education for 150 years.
- Moving away from a focus on practice or artefact, employability and enterprise are embedded within the programme. You will learn not only how to manage creativity, but also how to bring creativity to cultural and arts management. Alongside critical and creative thinking, you will acquire business skills, which are highly attractive to potential employers.

MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise is an innovative degree applying a blended learning approach, designed to enable you to pursue your studies whilst undertaking employment, by attending face-to-face classes taught by CSM faculty in several intensive weekends in Hong Kong, supplemented by seminars and workshops led by HKU SPACE academic staff.
- You will have an access to global-local experiences from CSM fly-in faculty who are active in the field of arts management, and from local academics and industry practitioners in arts, cultural and creative sectors.
The programme is not bound by the walls of a classroom. During intensive learning weekends in Hong Kong, we will draw upon our location in the heart of the city to attend arts and cultural events, and meet professionals working in the arts. Equally, you are encouraged to apply your learning to your own, individual, professional contexts and may choose to pursue a practice-based final project.

MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise acknowledges that we are living in a fast-changing, globalised world, which presents a great number of opportunities and challenges for cultural innovation. This Master’s programme takes these changing conditions as a starting point to engage you in developing new knowledge and skills in order to manage cultural projects in Hong Kong, China, the UK and around the world. It has been developed specifically in response to an increasing need for multi-skilled individuals who can both generate the ideas for original arts and cultural events, and provide leadership for the teams that realise them. These individuals will be dynamic, responsive, fluent in public and private sectors, and have the ability to collaborate and develop networks.
The programme addresses a contemporary shift within the cultural economy towards experiences and events, and away from the artefact. It is a response to multiple new forms of artistic and creative practice (interdisciplinary, time-based, socially-engaged, etc.), which demand new, hybrid forms of cultural management and organisation, and in turn, a new pedagogical approach from higher education institutions.
MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise begins with a definition of enterprise as engaging with projects that are new, challenging and complex, in order to create a valuable difference to specific stakeholders. It aims to enable you to gain a unique skill and knowledge set to become active creators in cultural management and production, be it as entrepreneurs, or within larger existing cultural organisations, anywhere in the world. For this reason, the programme values rich cultural diversity, and benefits from the broad range of cultural backgrounds of its students, staff, CSM and HKU SPACE generally. Cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue are the essential point-of-departure for cultural and creative innovation, which generates cultural capital, and in turn fosters economic capital formation.
Both Hong Kong and London are at the centre of a global network of alumni, educator-practitioners, and collaborating organisations and institutions. MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise works with knowledgeable practitioners to create an inspiring “glocal” learning experience, within a wide-ranging professional network.
The intensive face-to-face teaching takes place at HKU SPACE’s Admiralty campus or HKU campus in Pokfulam. Hong Kong is a contemporary hub for the cultural industries, and also a rich source of historical innovation across a wide range of cultural sectors, including museums, galleries, performance, festivals, and educational institutions.
The programme is aimed at graduates with some years of work experience who wish to challenge themselves by gaining a critical understanding of our world today as well as skills in the design, planning and production of creative events in the broadest sense. Focusing on the core capabilities of CSM, and its central role in the future of arts and other creative industries, it will offer you insights into aspects of cultural policy and governance, an introduction to business skills and processes, and strategic planning, which will equip you to shape creative futures. It will encourage radical thinking, based on creative research, analysis, and a deep understanding of the value of the cultural economy, and its role in creating cultural capital, to the wider economic, political and social environment in which it is located.

Duration of Study
Your learning will be time-tabled across 90 weeks over two full calendar years.
The programme has been designed to enable you to pursue your studies whilst also undertaking part-time employment, internships or care responsibilities. The programme operates through a blended-learning delivery model, by means of face-to-face and online teaching in a two-year period.
Peer and collaborative learning is fundamental to this model, and is achieved through a series of lectures, seminars, webinars, group tasks and workshops, as well as practice-based project developments in the realm of cultural production, enabling you to create networks that we hope will last well beyond your studies.
Intensive learning will take the form of face-to-face block teaching by CSM faculty members in Hong Kong:
- Intensive classes are usually held near the beginning of each module over a long weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
- Learning will then continue in the form of online learning, support and feedback by CSM ("Moodle", the UAL's Virtual Learning Environment), as well as face-to-face seminars and workshops led by HKU SPACE academic staff and industry practitioners throughout the remainder of the module.

Work you do on the programme is assessed informally (formative assessment) and formally (summative assessment), according to the learning outcomes for each module. Assessment can be staff-led or peer-to-peer. Feedback is normally given in an Assessment Form that maps the learning outcomes against Marking Criteria.
In order to complete the programme you must receive a passing mark for all pieces of work that are summatively assessed.
You will receive Learning Plan well in advance of each module, describing all details including topics, modes of study, teaching schedule, assessment criteria and reading list.
Forms of Assessment at UAL
There are two principal forms of assessment:
Formative assessment takes place through critiques and Personal Tutorials, and is primarily intended to provide you with effective feedback and guidance on your development, helping you to learn more effectively.
Summative assessment is the summation of the assessment activity that has taken place during the Module, and results in a recommended mark for your achievement. It is carried out by at least two members of staff, normally tutors who have taught the Module you have studied and is used:
- to determine whether you have satisfactorily achieved all the Learning Outcomes of the Module;
- to judge the level at which you have achieved the Learning Outcomes i.e. the recommended letter grade.
Access to HKU Libraries and Sport Facilities
All postgraduate students enrolled in Hong Kong at IC will have full access to HKU libraries and sport facilities which are located in Pokfulam and are within easy reach from IC’s Admiralty campus by bus and by MTR.

Upon satisfactory completion of all seven modules, students will be awarded the Master of Arts in Arts and Cultural Enterprise degree from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.
You will have to pass all modules to gain the MA. However, your award classification is based on your achievement in Module 7 (Dissertation or Live Project) only.
MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise aims to prepare graduates for the next step in their careers, whether that be a management position or a role within a leading team in the field of arts and cultural production. The entrepreneurial spirit of the programme might also encourage some graduates to set up their own company or creative practice, or to work as a consultant.
Other areas of employment that this programme might lead to include cultural institutions such as museums, theatre companies, cultural and live events companies and orchestras, broadcasters and publishers. Governance, policy and communication positions are also within the remit of the programme. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers where culture, economy and policy come together.
Specific roles a graduate might fulfil include: festival director; event manager; cultural sector entrepreneur; senior manager within an arts institution or organisation; cultural policy adviser within government; arts and community engagement adviser within a corporate enterprise; consultant to creative sector venture capital funds and angel investors (investors from the not-for-profit and philanthropic sectors).
The tuition fee of the entire programme is HK$164,800, payable in four equal instalments. An application fee of HK$300 applies.
Students are eligible to apply for the Extended Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (ENLS) administered by the Hong Kong Government Student Finance Office (SFO). The maximum amount of the financial assistance under ENLS is the total tuition fee(s) payable in the 2016/17 academic year. A life-time loan limit is imposed on each student eligible for receiving loans under the ENLS. The loan limit will be price-adjusted annually in accordance with the Composite Consumer Price Index. The life-time loan limit is HK$350,200 for the 2016/17 academic year.

University of the Arts London Alumni Scholarships
Any UAL alumnus enrolled to the programme will be offered a scholarship of HKD6,000 in his or her first year of study.

Notes to Applicants
- Applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS if the course is to start shortly. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (refer to Note 2 and Note 3), subject to the School’s discretion.
- HKU SPACE reserves the right to cancel a programme/course in cases of insufficient enrolment or unforeseen difficulties arising from running the course. In such circumstances, course fee would be refundable.
- In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS or cheque will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.
- In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant programme brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme staff for details.
- Payment and enrolment to a programme/course cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a programme/course, the student is not allowed to switch to another programme/course. When a transfer is approved by International College under special circumstances, a processing fee of 10% of the course fee will be levied on every approved transfer.
- Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail. An administration charge applies for each additional copy of receipts. For additional copies of receipts, please call +852 2910 7629. An administration charge of HK$30 for each additional copy applies. The receipt(s) is not a guarantee that your application is successful.
- If a short course is postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, including staff illness, flight delay or cancellation, HKU SPACE, and partner university if applicable, will make every reasonable effort to reschedule the class or to make up the schedule in the same week. - Due to copyright issues, and to allow a free exchange of ideas among participants, the use of audio and/or visual recording is strictly prohibited in class.
(a) hold a bachelor’s degree in Art, Design, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, or other areas of Creative Practice such as performance, or equivalent, awarded by a recognised institution;
(b) have at least two years of relevant work experience.
Applicants with qualifications from a university or comparable institution within/ outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching or assessment is not English, are required (unless exceptionally exempted) to obtain a score of 7.0 in IELTS (with a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-test); or to obtain a score of 100 in TOFEL iBT (with a minimum of 20 in each sub-test). We anticipate that the programme will also appeal to candidates with business management and administration backgrounds whose careers have led to direct engagement with creative processes and events or who wish to move into the cultural and creative sectors.
What we look for
The programme is explicitly aimed at those who want to plan, fund and realise cultural events and processes, rather than further developing their own individual practice. The programme is also aimed at professionals wanting to get a greater understanding of the frameworks governing the cultural sectors as well as foster their business management skills. Applicants may come from a wide variety of subject backgrounds, but must have experience of working in the arts, design, performance or creative business management and administration sectors.
As prospective entrepreneurs and creative strategists, applicants will need to demonstrate:
- that they are comfortable with taking risks;
- they can learn from failure;
- they are inclusive and understand the need to embrace diversity.
- have the ability to think in abstract terms about planning, management, and resources;
- have excellent communication skills;
- be numerate, and display some experience and understanding of logistics and strategic thinking;
- be team players and builders, not competitive individualists;
- demonstrate a collaborative mind-set and an ability to negotiate roles within multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams;
- have a basic level of computer literacy (much of the course is delivered online; you will be given guidance on the virtual learning environment, but you will need to have the computer skills necessary to participate in online learning). Applicants will need to be able to access/have:
- a recent computer with an up‐to‐date operating system and web browser (smartphones and tablets can also be used, but are subject to some restrictions during the live classes);
- a reliable, fast broadband connection (slow internet connection can affect the learner experience, especially during a live session in a virtual classroom);
- a microphone (e.g. integrated to a laptop);
- a webcam (e.g. integrated to a laptop);
- headphones (a headset with microphone/headphones is highly recommended).

Additional Notes to Non-Hong Kong Resident Applicants
To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong as dependants, who do not need prior approval before taking up full-time studies. It is the responsibility of individual applicants to make appropriate visa arrangements. Admission to an academic programme/course at HKU SPACE International College does not guarantee the issue of a student visa. Applicants may wish to note that courses are generally not considered by the Immigration Department for visa purposes except for self-financed, locally accredited taught postgraduate programmes awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.
