《Globalisation of J-Pop in the 21st Century: the Story of the Hong Kong-based Japanese Idol Group “Otome Syndream”》

Japan is the second largest music industry in the world and Japanese pop music (J-pop) has been immensely disseminated and consumed throughout the world, especially in East and Southeast Asia. J-pop has become an integral part of the cultural lives of many young people in these regions. This talk will try to examine the development and prospect of J-pop in the age of globalisation through the sharing from Rika and Ai, members from Otome Syndream (乙女シンドリーム) - a Hong Kong-based Japanese idol group established by a Japanese management company which aims to spread Japanese music to Hong Kong and other regions. Apart from the management and marketing of J-pop in the 21st century, the non-Japanese (mukokuseki) argument and soft power of Japanese cultural products will also be discussed.
